ORPHEUS & EURYDICE
Stemming back to the ancient Greek religion and myth, Orpheus was a renowned musician, poet, and prophet. He was said to be able to charm even the stones with his music. He was said to have been madly in love with his beautiful wife Eurydice who suffered a fatal bite on her heel when she feel into a nest of vipers. Orpheus was overcome with grief by her death and played such mournful songs that even the forest nymphs wept. The nymphs advised Orpheus to travel to the underworld and attempt to convince Hades to allow him to bring his wife back to the land of the living. When Hades and Persephone, heard Orpheus' music, it softened both their hearts and they were moved to grant him wish. Eurydice could return to the land of the living with Orpheus under one condition: he should walk in front of her and not look back until they both had reached the upper world.
Orpheus set off, with Eurydice following him His anxiety began to set in, however, when he could not hear her behind him. As soon as he reached the land of the living, Orpheus looked back to make sure Eurydice was following him, forgetting that he agreed they both needed to enter the upper world before he would look back. Eurydice and Orpheus shared one brief look, and she vanished for the last and final time.
